E-petition

This year the ACT Government will decide on a target for CO2 emission reduction for 2020. They are considering cuts between 25% and 40%.

This petition of residents of the ACT calls on the ACT Legislative Assembly to adopt the recommendation of its own standing committee of a target of 40% CO2 emission reduction for 2020.

Despite the recommendations of the Legislative Assembly's own standing committee for a 40% reduction, without a groundswell of popular support for a target of 40% cuts the government is likely to take the easy option and commit to a smaller target. With our children's climate at stake, anything less than a 40% cut is insufficient.

the worse we are at reducing our emissions the harder it will be to convince India and China to do the same. That's where we count.

Canberra has been progressive in respect of other initiatives such as civil unions and it should be the same with taking the lead on climate change.

40% is affordable, achievable and DESIRABLE. It's high time the ACT stopped pretending to lead the nation and assert ourselves at the forefront. We should be thinking nothing less than 40%.

A 40% reduction across the ACT shouldn't be that hard if our pollies just get on with the job!

Melbourne is going for carbon neutral by 2020 - ACT can do 40 % minimum, and actually save money by doing this through reduced energy costs!
